SCARLET SEPTEMBER KIWI® 'Mirzan' (Actinidia arguta 'Mirzan') is a unique Polish mini kiwifruit variety bred by Mirosław Zaniewski and released in 2015 by Clematis The Source of Good Climbers. This variety is particularly exceptional for its early ripening - the fruit starts ripening in early August and the harvest continues until mid-September. It is suitable for home gardens and production plantings, where it provides a stable and early harvest. In 2015 it won the prestigious Gold Medal at the FlowersExpo exhibition in Moscow.
This vigorously growing climber reaches a height of up to 8 metres and its annual increment can be 2 - 3 metres. The shoots wrap around the supports, allowing it to be planted on various structures, arbors, pergolas or net fences.
The fruits are oval in shape, 3,5 cm long and 2,5 cm wide. When grown in a sunny location, they acquire an intense red colour, which makes them not only attractive but also tasty. The flesh is red, juicy and sweet, and the fruit has an edible skin, which means that it can be eaten straight from the tree without peeling. They ripen from late August to early September, offering the first fruit of the season of all the mini kiwifruit varieties.
The plant starts fruiting in the 2nd-3rd year after planting, but as a female form it needs a male plant, such as Actinidia arguta 'Weiki M', to pollinate it. In production plantings, 1 male plant for every 6-8 female plants is recommended to ensure a sufficient yield.
For optimum growth and fruiting, 'Mirzan' kiwifruit requires a warm, sunny and wind-protected site. It thrives best in moist but well-drained fertile soil, which should have a slightly acidic pH. The plant is very cold hardy and can tolerate temperatures down to -28 °C, allowing it to be grown even in areas with cold winters.
When planting, it is important to immerse the root ball in water for 10-30 minutes to ensure that it is well watered. The seedling should be placed in a 40 × 40 × 40 cm hole, with 10 cm of well-rotted compost or manure at the bottom. When planting, care should be taken to place the plant 1 cm deeper than it grew in the pot. The spacing between plants should be 2-4 metres, with a distance of at least 30 cm when planting close to a wall or other plants.
Proper pruning is key to keeping the plant in good condition and ensuring a bountiful harvest. In January-February, a strong pruning is carried out to encourage growth and fruit formation. In June, a fine shaping cut is recommended, while in August another cut is made to help the wood mature better before winter. From the second year after planting, the plant should be fertilised regularly from April onwards and watered abundantly during the growing season. Mulching with bark helps to retain moisture in the soil while protecting the roots from drying out.
Kiwi 'Mirzan' is ideal for planting along various supports such as gazebos, pergolas, net fences or wire structures. It can also be grown along wires stretched between poles, making it a great plant for commercial cultivation. Its high hardiness, abundant yield and early ripening make it a great choice for anyone wanting to grow quality mini kiwifruit in their garden or production plantation.
