Oleic acid – the fat that heals
The cornerstone of the cardioprotective effect of hazelnuts is their lipid profile. Fat makes up more than 60% of the kernel’s dry matter, and its absolutely dominant component is oleic acid – a monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA) that accounts for 76.7% to 82.8% of all fatty acids present. A diet high in MUFA and low in saturated fat reduces the risk of ischaemic heart disease, improves blood lipid levels and helps lower blood pressure. A high MUFA content also protects LDL particles from dangerous oxidation.
