Blueberry (Southern Highbush) - Variety 'Gulf Coast'

'Gulf Coast' is an excellent blueberry variety belonging to the Southern Highbush group. It was specially bred for warmer regions where traditional northern varieties fail due to a lack of winter chill. For the home gardener, it represents an ideal choice thanks to its compact growth (also excellent for pots), early harvest, and high aesthetic value.

Blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum × Vaccinium darrowii) 'Gulf Coast'

For the home gardener, it represents an ideal choice thanks to its compact growth (also excellent for pots), early harvest, and high aesthetic value.

Main advantages of the variety:

  • Low winter chilling requirement (ideal for warmer regions and mild winters).
  • Compact, dense growth – a perfect choice for growing in pots and small gardens as well.
  • Early ripening time (one of the first blueberries of the season).
  • Firm fruits with an excellent sweet taste and long shelf life after harvest.
  • High aesthetic value (flowers in spring, red leaves in autumn).
Origin and Breeding
  • Botanical classification: Complex interspecific hybrid (Vaccinium corymbosum × Vaccinium darrowii).
  • Origin: The variety was developed and registered by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) at the research institute in Poplarville, Mississippi in 1987.
  • Low chilling requirement: This is a key trait of the variety. To successfully bloom and fruit in spring, it requires only 200 to 300 hours of winter chill (temperatures below 7 °C). This makes it perfect for warmer lowlands and regions with mild winters.
Detailed variety description: Plant and Ornamentality
  • Vigor: Forms a smaller, dense, upright, and very neat shrub. It grows to a height of 1.2 to 1.5 meters (maximum 1.8 - 2 m). Thanks to this compact shape, it is extremely suitable for growing in containers on terraces and balconies.
  • Foliage: Leaves are glossy, dark green (so-called silver leaf type). In autumn, they turn into magnificent shades of red and orange, giving the shrub high ornamental value.
  • Blooming: Blooms very early in spring with a flood of tiny, bell-shaped flowers in white to pale pink color.
Fruits and Flavor Profile
  • Appearance and size: Fruits are medium to large, firm, deep blue in color. They have a small stem scar, which contributes to their excellent shelf life.
  • Taste: Excellent, sweet with a mildly spicy (tart) fruit finish. Sugar content reaches 13.0 – 13.3 °Brix.
  • Harvest: It is an early variety. Fruits (in southern US regions) ripen as early as late spring to early summer (often in May/June depending on location).
Cultivation properties and agrotechnics
  • Environmental requirements:
    • Location: Requires full sun (at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily) for the best yield. In extremely hot areas, however, it appreciates partial shade during the harshest afternoon sun.
    • Soil (Critical factor): Like all blueberries, 'Gulf Coast' strictly requires acidic (pH 4.5 – 5.5), light, and well-drained soil. It is ideal to plant it in pure highmoor peat mixed with bark. It combines excellently with other acid-loving plants (rhododendrons, azaleas, heathers).
    • Moisture: Has a relatively shallow root system. Requires regular and even watering (2-3 times a week), especially during fruit formation. Mulching (e.g., with pine bark) is essential to retain moisture and protect roots from overheating.
  • Pollination and maintenance:
    • Pollination: The variety is self-fertile, so it will produce a crop even as a standalone shrub. To achieve maximum yields and larger fruits, however, it is recommended to plant another blueberry variety blooming at the same time nearby.
    • Pruning: Done after harvest or in early spring. Old, fruited wood is removed, which threshes out the shrub and promotes the growth of new, productive shoots.

Drawbacks of the variety:

  • Risk of spring frosts: Since it wakes up and blooms very early in spring, flowers can be damaged by late spring frosts in colder areas.
  • Harvest specificity: During harvest, stems tend to remain attached to the fruit. For the home grower, this poses no problem, but for this reason, the variety did not catch on in large-scale commercial farming (where clean fruit without stems is required).
