Red currant Svyatomichailivska is a modern large-fruited dessert variety with an exceptional sweet and sour taste. It was bred by crossing Jonkheer Van Tets and Altaiskaja Rannaja at the NAAN Fruit Institute in Kiev, and was entered in the Variety Register in 2001.
The fruits are very large, bright red, round and even in size, with a thin, elastic and shiny skin. The clusters are medium-long, dense and the berries ripen at the same time. The flesh is light red and dense, with an excellent flavour, which is pleasantly sweet and sour and highly rated. The variety is ideal for both fresh consumption and processing.
The bush is medium-strong and compact, growing to a height of approximately 1,5 metres. This variety is very easy to grow, making it a great choice even for less experienced gardeners. It is self-pollinating, so it does not require a pollinator.
The plant thrives in sunny locations and is exceptionally drought tolerant. The fully hardy variety is also resistant to major fungal diseases such as American powdery mildew and anthracnose, as well as major pests.
It matures in the first half of June and is a medium-early variety. It is characterised by a very high, regular and stable yield. Up to 7 kg of quality fruit can be obtained from a single mature bush.
