The 'Queen Victoria' plum (Prunus domestica 'Queen Victoria') is an old English ringlet variety, known for its large fruit and excellent flavour. This self-pollinating variety produces large oval fruits with reddish-purple skin. The flesh is golden yellow, very sweet and juicy, with a sugar content of up to 16 g per 100 g of fruit. The flesh separates well from the stone, which facilitates the processing of the fruit.
The variety ripens in mid-August to early September and is characterised by its early onset of fruiting. The yield is regular and high, making this variety suitable for growing in gardens and orchards. 'Queen Victoria' is considered to be a healthy variety with good resistance to common plum diseases.
It is grown on a myrobalan rootstock (Prunus cerasifera), which ensures strong growth and stability of the tree. Myrobalan is adaptable to a wide range of soil conditions, including soils with a higher limestone content, and has good frost resistance. This rootstock promotes strong tree growth and stability.
The 'Queen Victoria' plum prefers sunny to partly shaded sites with a humid, slightly moist and permeable soil. It is resistant to frosts down to -27 °C. The fruit is ideal for direct consumption, but also for processing, for example for jams, compotes, drying or making spirits. In addition, this variety is an excellent pollinator for other ringlet species.
The 'Queen Victoria' plum is popular because of its excellent flavour, the versatility of the fruit and its easy cultivation. It is an ideal choice for home growers and professional gardeners alike.
