Vine 'New York Muscat' - an aromatic gem with an unmistakable muscat aroma
'New York Muscat' is an older but still very popular table grape variety, known for its exceptional aroma and full-bodied muscat flavour. It is an ideal choice for lovers of strongly aromatic grapes and is one of the best table Muscat varieties grown in our conditions.
The variety originated in the USA as a cross between Vitis vinifera and Vitis labrusca, which gives it a characteristic flavour and at the same time better resistance. The vine has bisexual flowers, making it self-pollinating and reliably fruiting even in the absence of other varieties.
The growing season is medium-early to early, with the grapes usually ripening in late August to early September. The shoots grow moderately vigorously, so it is also suitable for smaller gardens.
The clusters are medium to large, looser, which reduces the risk of rot. Berries are medium to large, round, dark purple to black-blue. The skin is firmer, the flesh juicy and exceptionally aromatic - with a typical muscat aroma which develops strongly when fully ripe. The flavour is sweet and intense, with a subtle 'labruscous' note, which, however, is not distracting.
The sugar content of the berries is around 18-20 °NM, which is sufficient for excellent table quality and also allows processing into juices or Muscat wines. Thanks to its characteristic profile, it is also suitable for making homemade desserts or as a flavourful addition to fruit salads.
The 'New York Muscat' variety has good resistance to fungal diseases and is moderately resistant to frost, so that it thrives even in the wine-growing areas of central Europe. For best fruit quality, a moderate reduction in yield and a sunnier location are advisable.
