Black Mulberry 'Shelly' is a unique variety originating from Ukraine, bred by breeder L. I. Prokazin. It is characterised by an exceptional combination of properties - very large fruits, delicious flavour, high and regular fertility, and at the same time full hardiness, which has been tested in the difficult climatic conditions of Ukraine.
The tree has strong growth and a compact crown, growing to a height of 3 metres or more. It is a self-pollinating variety that flowers on both annual and perennial wood, and comes into fruit very early - regularly in the second year after planting.
The fruits are unusually large, cylindrical, purple-black and completely black when fully ripe. They weigh 7-8 grams, are 4,5-5 cm long and about 2 cm wide. They are firm and hold well on the tree - they do not fall off, and they last undamaged for several days after turning. The flesh is juicy, seedless, aromatic, with dark red juice. In sunny weather, it quickly picks up sugar, which increases the sweetness of the fruit. The taste is delicious, refreshingly sweet and strongly aromatic.
The fruit ripens continuously over a period of four to five weeks, from mid-June to mid-July. This makes for a long-lasting and gradual harvest. Ideal for direct consumption, they are also excellent for freezing or processing into liqueurs, jams and other homemade products.
The tree has good immunity and can reliably resist attack by diseases and pests. It does not require chemical protection during the growing season, making it an excellent choice for organic farming and home gardeners. It is also frost-resistant to -23 °C and adaptable to different climatic conditions.
In addition to their utilitarian value, black mulberry fruits also have medicinal properties - they contain a complex of minerals and vitamins that calm the nervous system, improve blood circulation and help to reduce swelling.
