Darrow blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum ‘Darrow’) is one of Canada's favourite late varieties of highbush blueberries that are excellent in size, flavour and hardiness. This variety is ideal for growing blueberries in the garden as well as in containers on the patio or balcony.
The Darrow blueberry grows to a height of 1.5 to 2 metres and forms a dense, upright shrub with abundant foliage. It is suitable for gardens and as a solitaire, but is also excellent in group planting.
The fruits of this variety are large, blue-purple berries, up to 20 mm in diameter. Their taste is balanced - sweet with a mild acidity, making them ideal for eating fresh, but also for freezing, jam and baking. Darrow blueberries ripen late - from August to September, which extends the blueberry season.
The Darrow variety has a high hardiness to -29 °C, which makes it ideal for Slovak climatic conditions. For successful cultivation it requires:
acidic soil with pH 4,5-5,5 (ideally peat should be added),
sunny position or partial shade,
regular watering without waterlogging,
fertilization with special fertilizers for acid-loving plants (blueberries, rhododendrons).
For a rich harvest, it is recommended to grow several varieties of blueberries at the same time for better pollination.
